Woman with hands crossed over her heart in a sign of self love in sobriety

Learning to Love Your Sober Self: Why It’s Not All Yoga and Journaling

July 26, 20253 min read

I’m sorry if I burst your bubble here but, this sober journey?
It’s not all cosy blankets, herbal teas and bobbing along on that pink cloud (yes, the pink sobriety cloud is an actual thing).

Learning to love your sober self can feel quite uncomfortable.

It’s like holding a mirror up and seeing what’s really there—no filters, no avoiding and no numbing.

It’s brave work.
It takes courage.

But it's so fckin worth it!

Keep Yourself Accountable (Without Tearing Yourself Down)

For years (or if you’re like me, more like decades), you’ve used alcohol to cope, to escape, to function.

To take the edge off.
To switch off.
To feel like you’re still ‘fun’.

But somewhere along the way, what you believed helped you feel like “you”... started making you feel like a stranger in your own skin.

Self-love in sobriety isn’t about sugar-coating the truth.
It’s about learning how to tell yourself the truth without shame.

  • “This isn’t working for me anymore.”

  • “I’m not fine.”

  • “I’m tired of pretending.”

That kind of honesty? It’s powerful.
And it’s where
everything starts to shift.

What You Stop Doing Matters Just As Much

Because the more you say no to the crap that isn’t in alignment with the authentic You, the more space you create for what is.

  • Waking up without regret.

  • Feeling more present in your own life.

  • Trusting yourself again.

  • Reclaiming your mornings, your moods, your motivation.

These are the simple joys you’ve been missing.

And hand on my heart, this is where the magic lives.

You Don’t Have to Become Someone New (But it might feel like you are.)

It’s inevitable that (some) people are going to think and might tell you “you’ve changed…” when you quit drinking.

And from their perspective, it’s understandable - especially if you’ve been their drinking buddy for years.

But I don’t believe you change who you really are.

You just come back to who you always were - underneath the drinking.

The You who knows what they truly need and isn’t scared to ask for it.

The You who doesn’t need to apologise for being a tired grumpy asshle all the time - because you’ve got your natural spark back.

The You who wants to feel things
fully, without fear because you understand how you tick.

Sobriety isn’t the end of fun.

It’s the beginning of
a sense of calm, deeper connection, and badass confidence that actually lasts longer than one glass of Sauvignon.

Before You Go, As Always I Love To Leave You With A Few Self-Coaching Questions to Sit With:

  • What’s one thing I keep doing that quietly chips away at how I feel about myself?
(And what would it feel like to let it go—even just for a week?)

  • Where in my life am I still pretending I’m fine when I’m not?
(Hint: That’s usually the place most ready for change.)

  • What part of me have I been pushing down that actually just wants to be heard?
(It’s amazing what shifts when we stop numbing and start listening.)
