What Does A Sobriety Coach Do?

5 Misconceptions — Debunked

I work with people who are smart, capable, and self-aware — yet stuck in a drinking cycle of “I’ll be good this week” followed by “bloody hell, I’ve done it again.”

Over the years I’ve heard a lot of misconceptions about sobriety coaching.

Let’s clear five of them up — and show you exactly why coaching helps.

1) “I should be able to figure this out myself.”

If willpower was enough, wouldn’t it have worked by now?

I’m not here to make you “try harder.” I'll help you understand how your mind works and use it to build healthier habits that last.

We’ll uncover the why behind the patterns that keep you stuck, learn what to do differently to get unstuck, and then practice new, empowering behaviours — consistently.

Read my blog on creating mental strength in sobriety.

2) “It’s a sign of weakness to ask for help.”

What if real strength is deciding not to waste another minute struggling alone?

This work takes courage. Not a brave face — honest change.

Coaching doesn’t fix you — you’re not broken.

It frees you to live lighter, clearer, and more in control.

Less overthinking.

Less self-sabotage.

More you.

3) “Coaching is just like talking to a friend.”

Talking builds awareness — coaching builds a strategy for success.

Some people are skeptical about working with a coach and believe coaching is less effective than therapy or counselling. See Misconception 5.

Therapy helps you understand your past.

Coaching helps you move forward.

Both have value, but if you want momentum, confidence, and new habits, coaching gives you tools you can use day-to-day.

In my coaching we get specific: we track patterns, rewire habits, and build practical tools that help you stay calm, confident, and clear-headed — in real life.

4) “It’s too expensive.”

What’s it really costing you to stay stuck for say - another year?

Alcohol isn’t free — it drains energy, focus, peace, and your wallet.

Coaching is practical, tailored to you, and — when you apply it — one of the most worthwhile investments you’ll make in yourself.

(If you’ve read all the books and nothing’s changed, the right level of commitment might be the accountability that finally shifts things.)

Read my blog about Discomfort or Regret - Which one are you willing to live with.

5) “I’m not bad enough to need help.”

Why wait for a rock bottom, you hope never to reach, when you can choose a better life now?

Sobriety coaching isn’t for severe addiction. Where appropriate, I’ll signpost to medical support if there are indications of alcohol dependence.

Whether you’re pouring to unwind, to cope, or just out of habit — you deserve better. You deserve to feel calm, clear, and in control again.

That’s where coaching comes in. ⬇️

What Working Together Looks Like (in brief)

  • Clarity first: map your triggers, routines, and “danger hours”.

  • Simple plan: simple, do-able steps that suit your life (not someone else’s).

  • Tools you’ll actually use: urges, evenings, social plans, sleep, boundaries.

  • Momentum: weekly focus, habit tracking, and honest reflection — without judgement.
