Wine, Weight & Sunday Scaries

The Truth About Wine, Weight, and the Sunday Scaries

Understanding the hidden link between alcohol, midlife fatigue, and starting again on Monday.

That Familiar Feeling

It’s Sunday, the week ahead is looming and you’re already feeling tired just thinking about it.

And then there’s the half bottle of wine left in the fridge from Saturday night. It feels like an easy way to wind down—a bit of comfort, something to take the edge off that creeping sense of dread.

If this hits home, you’re not alone. The “Sunday Scaries” are real. But so is your body’s quiet plea for something different.

Why Alcohol Hits So Hard in Midlife

Here’s what’s going on:

  • Alcohol is an energy thief. It disrupts your sleep, spikes your stress hormones, and nudges your blood sugar into chaos.

  • It’s a metabolic saboteur. Your liver prioritises processing alcohol over fat burning—especially after 40, when your metabolism naturally slows.

  • It confuses your hormones. Oestrogen swings in peri- and post-menopause can make your body more reactive to alcohol, encouraging fat storage around your middle.

  • It hits men too. Alcohol lowers testosterone and raises oestrogen—fueling weight gain, draining energy, and quietly chipping away at confidence and drive.

You Don’t Have to Quit Overnight—But Curiosity Changes Everything

You'll know by now that I advocate for living alcohol-free, because I know how much lighter and clearer life becomes when you stop trying to control it and simply thrive without it.

But I also believe in starting with curiosity and reflection.

What if just a few drink-free days helped you:

  • Sleep better?

  • Wake up feeling sharper and more productive?

  • Feel more in control of your health choices?

Before you pour that glass, ask yourself:

“What do I really need tonight?”
“Is wine solving anything—or just delaying how I want to feel?”
