Why are you still drinking
You Know Why, You Know How - So Why Are You Still Drinking?
You know why you want to stop drinking…
and you even know how to stop drinking…
and you absolutely know all the benefits of stopping drinking —
yet you still drink.
What the actual F is going on?
The Truth About Your Stuck-Story
If this is you and I was to ask you what you thought was going on, you’d probably spend a good few minutes reciting what I call your “stuck-story” - the story of who, what and why you believe you haven’t been able to stop yet.
Some “stuck-stories” are very convincing and if I’m not careful to manage my own brain when coaching on this, even I could get pulled into the story.
And let’s be honest, if you work with me, you’re not paying me to nod along with the stuck-story you’ve been telling yourself — you’ve got your best friend for that. 😉
What Are You Avoiding?
Let me be 100% clear on this for a moment before we go further.
I’m not saying that life events (good or bad) shouldn’t affect you. Of course they will.
What I am asking you is “What are you avoiding?”
The Missing Piece Of Your Sobriety Puzzle
I know you’re ready to uncover the missing piece in your sobriety puzzle.
But what’s the missing piece Gillian?? (I can almost hear you shout at the screen) 😆
Well, it’s different for everyone — we’re all unique human beings with beautifully unique brains.
That’s a bit of a boring answer right? 🤨
But stay with me for a second and let me bring you back - with a bit of a bump.
There’s one thing almost everyone who feels confused or disheartened about quitting drinking has in common.
And it’s this:
There’s something you’re choosing not to face.
How do I know this?
I know this because...
...if you’d already faced and worked through the thing — that belief, that thought, that truth you keep avoiding — you wouldn’t still be drinking.
What You Might Be Avoiding Without Realising It
You’re choosing not to face:
Having an honest conversation with someone close to you about how much you’re struggling and that you need their support
Letting go of resentment or an old grudge that’s quietly eating you up
Confusing self-care with self-coddling - I see this a lot
Taking responsibility instead of laying blame
Letting go of your ‘drinking identity’ once and for all - even if it upsets some people
Owning the fact that small changes are what lead to big results - because you’re still hoping for a magic wand to appear
And the two I see in 99.9% of clients I work with and I was personally 100% guilty of for years:
Underestimating the effort it will take,
and
Giving up long before you’ve given yourself a chance to prove how strong you actually are.
