Outside Your Comfort Zone!

What If the Best Thing Ever Is Waiting Just Outside Your Comfort Zone?

House sitting has taken Steve and me to places we never imagined—charming towns, vibrant cities, tucked-away countryside homes. We've cared for so many beautiful animals and connected with wonderful people along the way.

But I didn’t leap into it with wide-eyed excitement. Far from it.

It actually took Steve years to convince me to give house sitting a try. Not because I didn’t see the appeal—but because stepping into the unknown made every nerve in my body want to run in the opposite direction.

The thought of living in a stranger’s home, looking after their pets (whom I’d never met), in a place I’d never been? My worry-prone brain short-circuited just thinking about it. So, for a long time, it was a firm and fearful “no.”

Eventually, though, I said yes.

And not to some gentle test run a couple of hours away—we went all in. We packed up and drove from Manitoba, Canada, all the way to Ajijic, Mexico, for our very first sit. No toe-dipping into the shallow end. It was a cannonball into the deep.

Looking back now, I’m so grateful Steve’s adventurous spirit rubbed off on me.

Because that trip changed everything.

If I’d kept saying no—if I’d let fear keep steering the wheel—I wouldn’t have those incredible memories.

But the shift that happened wasn’t just geographical. It was internal.

Somewhere along the way, I realised that choosing to do things that made me uncomfortable could actually change me. It cracked something open. And from that opening came a surprising emotion:

Curiosity.

When I stopped assuming that discomfort meant danger, I started asking different questions. Instead of spiraling into worst-case scenarios, I began to wonder…

What if speaking my truth didn’t lead to rejection—but connection?

What if giving up alcohol was the beginning of the best version of me?

What if starting strength training in my 50s helped me feel stronger—inside and out?

What if going back to study at the Open University made me more confident than ever before?

Fear loves to ask, “What if it all goes wrong?”
But curiosity whispers, “What if it all goes right?”

So I want to ask you:

How many times have you written yourself off before even giving yourself a chance?

How many times have you said, “I wish I could…” but stopped short because of a worst-case “what if”?

What if—just once—you flipped that script?

What if nothing bad happened?
What if you felt proud of yourself?
What if it turned out to be the best thing ever?

Let yourself get curious. Start unpacking the fears you’ve been carrying without question.

And maybe—just maybe—you’ll discover that the life you’ve been longing for is waiting for you… just outside your comfort zone.
